Christmas is a notoriously busy time. But once all the fairy dust and snow settles, we’re reminded yet again that it’s a family holiday after all. If you’re spending it with your kids, you should really make it count and create memories together. Here are just a few tips on how to do that.

  1. Get busy in the kitchen together

Turn a mundane activity into a fun one by bringing the kids along. Besides the usual recipes, you can ask your little helpers to make snowman pancakes (regular pancakes in different sizes, sprinkled with powdered sugar and decorated with fruit and chocolate), hot chocolate with marshmallows, or even kinder punch. Make it simple and memorable.

  1. Spend time outdoors

Being outside in the winter is a good way to train your immune system. If you’re lucky enough to have a white Christmas, you can make snow angels, snowball fights, or even go ice-skating on a frozen lake. If you don’t, you can at least go for a walk and admire the winter landscape.

  1. Teach them some handy crafts

Take up knitting, for example. Even though your child’s wool creations probably won’t be the best, they can at least dress up their toys, or even your family pet. Plus, knitting can improve their fine motoric skills, which is a huge plus (especially if you want them to become a surgeon one day!).

  1. Play board games

They’re a great way to bond and boost your children’s creativity and knowledge (or even your own!). There are loads to choose from, and then spend hours playing. Or, if you’re just as in love with technology as we are, you could play with Robo Wunderkind, build it together and watch your kids bring the robot to life!

  1. Build a fort

There’s nothing cozier than an indoor fort filled with pillows, blankets, snacks, warm tea and a movie playing in the background. Just make sure you don’t fall asleep in it before your children do.

  1. Do some good deeds

‘Tis the season of giving, so consider giving to those who need it most. Bring your old clothes to a shelter, spend some time at a food bank, visit an old people’s home, or go walk some dogs at a shelter. Whatever charity you devote your time to, it will be time well spent.

  1. Have a movie marathon

Whether in a fort, bed or simply on the living room couch, play some children’s Christmas classics (ones that you absolutely have not seen a million times already at all!) and feel absolutely no guilt over the fact that you’re being a lazy couch potato for a day. You deserve it.

  1. Create your own decorations

Collect some pine branches, dry some oranges, pick up a few pinecones and whatever else you like, and create your own Christmas wreath! Or, alternatively, collect the used wrapping for Christmas presents and let your children use it to create their own patchwork collage art.

  1. Make a physical photo album

It’s so rare these days, you’ll be a true hipster. Whether you have a polaroid, an analog or digital camera, let your creativity shine. Create an album or a scrapbook your children will love returning to years later.

  1. Relax and enjoy the slow days

Thoroughly enjoy relaxing without an ounce of guilt or alternative productive plans running through your head. It’s extremely important to allow yourself to do nothing productive every once in a while, and what better time is there than the Christmas holidays? That’s right, no better time at all.
